Transmission Gallery brings together an inaugural exhibition of assemblage work by five neon artists to celebrate the opening of a second gallery location, this one in San Francisco.  Artists include Michael Flechtner, Shawna Peterson, Bill Concannon, Roger Daniells, and Amanda Barr, with work ranging from intimate neon works to complex constructions. Signage, toys, kitsch, skulls, flowers and weeds are among the objects chosen for illuminated transformation in pieces highlighting concepts from the challenging to the playful and wry. Come bask in the glow while considering the work at Transmission Gallery San Francisco.

Michael Flechtner was inspired to create neon work after moving to L.A. in the 80's. His work is in the Museum of Neon Art, where he now serves on the Board, and can also be seen in public works in Tokyo, L.A. and Minneapolis. With a long list of awards, publications, exhibitions, collectors and artworks, Flechtner continues to contribute to the development of neon as an art form, while undertaking restoration projects and encouraging younger neon artists.

Premier neon sign maker, Bill Concannon's work has set the scene in movies you might recognize; Back to the Future,  The Matrix, Basic Instinct, and more.  Concannon's love of neon and argon connects with a quirky sense of humor in the  art he creates, riffing on objects he's rescued and repurposed to a new illuminated life.

Shawna Peterson's affinity for vintage signage often emerges in her work where they may be cut and reassembled, obscuring or reorganizing their meaning. Typical themes of home, everyday or working class struggles and identity characterize Peterson's thought provoking pieces.

Like many neon artists, Roger Daniells' work as a sign maker inspires ideas for art work. Delighting in the color,  his work embraces celebration in the brilliance and glow of neon.

Amanda Barr brings difficult subjects to light in pieces compounding ceramic dipped objects with neon script in various languages. Evocative and potent, the work explores the power of damaged beauty in claiming the territory of self that evolves from growth through trauma and pain.
