Transmission Gallery is pleased to present Fear Not, recent work by William Rhodes.
Rhodes’ work combines hand carved figures, flames and snakes with objects collected from a family home, photographs, hardware, tools, and other remnants of everyday life. Neon words signal from some pieces, Chosen, Fear Not, Woke. The resulting works resemble shrines or memorials, while remaining grounded in the ordinary. Religious symbols appear alongside household objects. A photograph might be surrounded by carvings densely embellished with tools, fasteners and filigree, elaborate and gold leafed. A suitcase becomes an architectural space. A toilet seat becomes the base of a monument. Elements routinely disregarded are carefully incorporated into elevated constructions framing and uplifting the fundamental value of the everyday and unassuming.
Key to the work are the people that center it; mentors and leaders encircled in gold leaf, everyday heroes too, honorably living routine lives, and those in the margins, overlooked and treated as disposable. By giving attention to these lives, enshrining and revering them, Rhodes considers how value is assigned and who gets remembered.
The title Fear Not appears in the work as both a phrase and a kind of instruction. It can be read in relation to the religious imagery that runs throughout the sculptures, but it also takes on a more personal meaning.
