Solo exhibition on view in the  Small Space at Transmission Gallery

Suzanne M. Long

Get A Head

April 17 – May 31, 2025
Artist's Reception
Saturday, April 26th from 1-4 pm

Featured in our Small Space is Get A Head, a selection of 34 functional and not so functional small ceramic heads, jars, vases and cups by Suzanne M. Long, accompanied by 7 larger pieces. Topped as if by objects from the subconscious, an apple, the moon, a bird or a simple wire twist, the heads convey a range of subtle emotions cued by slight casts of the eye or tilt of lips, aloof, observant perhaps but aware and chagrined, indifferent or hopeful.

Suzanne M. Long: Get A Head

Transmission Gallery is pleased to present a whole host of heads by ceramic sculptor Suzanne M. Long, on view in the Small Space, April 17th through May 31st. Jar heads, cup heads, vases and sculptures, these short form pieces are more like a sentence than a paragraph, a haiku rather than a novel, while several larger and more complex pieces expand on various themes.

Please join us for the Artist's Reception, Saturday, April 26th. Stop in any time from 1-4 pm to greet the artist, enjoy the light refreshments and check out the concurrent exhibition, Daniel McClain: Do Over, with more art to see in the gallery showroom.  All are welcome to this fun free event with free street parking nearby.

Suzanne M. Long Statement

Artist Statement:

My work is about memory, adding a visual narrative to my thoughts. My work is about melancholy and humor, politics and storytelling. Sometimes I don't know what my work is about, I just have a compulsion to make it. I let my hands lead, other times my mind. I like to work in series, a season of work, making the same piece over and over, like picking out the notes on a piano, practicing. I repeat it again and again until it is a part of me, then I can release the concept, with some understanding of it. My work teaches me who I am, it defines the edges for a time, then my focus changes and my work becomes something else. It answers a question for me; it poses a question to me.

Get A Head Statement:

This body of work came to fruition out of a bargain I made with myself. While suffering from a case of blank page, white canvas syndrome. I implored to create at
least one piece a day. I started with cups, then lidded jars and small head sculptures... soon the shelves in my studio filled up with heads and my head filled up
with ideas.

These short form pieces strive to capture micro emotions and sometimes big ideas.
