Ari Salomon presents a grid of 6 Feet Apart images as a window installation at Transmission Gallery, in the Mission.

Images of "6 feet apart" markers comprise the elements of this installation. On the one hand they are visually compelling abstract elements, on the other, stark reminders of the anxiety and anguish that led to their ubiquitous placement around the city.  While the intensity at the height of the pandemic period had a tremendous impact on our collective experience, these markers remain as evidence and yet fade into routine and unremarked elements, easily dismissed as one traverses the city, now at times bumping shoulders with passersby along the street. Ironically they are not spaced six feet apart here, as we no longer maintain the six feet apart social stance  that was the hallmark of human interaction for the time.

Born in Israel, Salomon was raised in San Diego and is now based in San Francisco. He received a B.A. from U.C. Santa Cruz in 1993 in Art History with a focus on contemporary art theory and studio photography. He has exhibited across the USA as well as internationally in Tokyo, Kyoto, Paris and Poland.

6 Feet Apart
Exhibition statement:

This typology investigates the ubiquitous ground markers directing people standing in line to keep 6 feet apart to prevent the spread of Covid-19. These markers are often just a single piece of tape adhered to concrete and distressed from months of being stepped on.
This photographic method of collecting, sorting, and classifying is a reflection on the scientific processes we are relying on to fight this pandemic and also the tedious nature of many of the life changes we have had to endure. New information becomes apparent in the context of these groupings. Contrasts and similarities reveal beautiful variations as the eye tunes into this minimal landscape.

Using a detached, documentary style offers an opportunity for viewers to reflect on the quiet moments as well as the irony of working together by staying apart.
