Julie Clements: TETHERED
Ceramic lemming riding a space vehicle
Julie Clements,  American idiot, 2023,  ceramic, metal wire, luster, 17"Wx10"Tx9"D
July 20 - September 2, 2023
Artist's Reception, Saturday, July 22nd, 1- 4 pm

Well recognized for her ceramic work combining fascination with the wild diversity of the animal kingdom, extremes of human behavior and a skeptically humorous approach, Julie Clements brings new work to view in Tethered at Transmission Gallery in Oakland.

With toylike trappings, Clements' delightfully whimsical exotic birds and unusual creatures come freighted with commentary. Engaging and earnest, they slyly poke at a culture tethered to Social Media, and careening toward the future like lemmings following the crowd. The work is a lot of fun, we can recognize oh so much about Us (or Them), but this is serious business!

Julie Clements' Comments on the work:
American idiot
Lost in space. Do lemmings jump off cliffs? A persistent cultural myth, lemmings in fact do not instinctually commit suicide. Story and meaning are a seduction that isn’t always based on truth.
American's playgrounds
The nest is a crown of thorns created by the crow with shiny objects found on an American playground.
Arid adaptations (Kangaroo rat and cactus)
The kangaroo rat is a dessert specialist. It is granivorous, eating almost an exclusive seed diet. They don’t drink water. They have evolved to conserve water by not sweating and reabsorbing moisture from their breath. Standing 5” tall it can jump up to 9 feet in the air and can change direction mid-leap to avoid predators. While you might suspect they would be well adapted for a hot future, because of climate change their habitats are also changing.
DETOUR (Crow with nails on sign)
Plotting crow.
DO NOT ENTER
Common pigeon with match on do not enter sign.
E Pluribus Unum
“Out of many there is one” is a reinterpretation of the state of America. The arrow and bullet represent the war with ourselves. The greatest threat to liberty is within.
Flying squirrel
Flying squirrel
Guarded
Geoffroy’s marmoset and poison dart frogs on a human made object. The intersection of wildlife and built environments.
Messy
You won’t find them in nature. The blue Indian ring-necked parakeet is an unusual color in the animal kingdom. Typically green, the blue parakeet has been artificially created by selecting for the blue mutation.
Squirrel training
Where do cultural norms and expectations begin?
Topsy Turvy
King golden lemur with plane and Emerald toucanet. Second in series of the intersection of wildlife and built environments.
Under Lock & Key
The canary carries the keys to reproductive choice- misoprostel and mifepristone.
Viewmaster
Capuchin looking through the viewmaster.
