Lynn Beldner, Suitable Destination, 2022, paper, felt, glue, 16 x 16 x 16, Some Kind of Expedition, mixed media, 48 x 28 x 6
Transmission Gallery is proud to present Lynn Beldner's solo exhibition, "Expeditions," at their location in San Francisco's vibrant Mission District. “Expeditions” features a collection of thought-provoking pieces that explore the complexities of vulnerability, internal dialog, and current events.
Through simple and unassuming materials like string, strips, and hand drawn shapes, Beldner invites viewers on a visual journey into her personal and esoteric world. One series of works incorporates mysteriously truncated quotes from works by British writer and poet Barbara Pym into an algorithm of sweet drawings worked onto cardboard boxes. Two larger pieces, "Suitable Destination" and "Some Kind of Expedition," encourage an examination of the sensations triggered by the scale and juxtaposition of an empty white coat and separate, but related, globe sidekick altered with felt dots. Other works vibrate with a quiet delicacy that belies a certain strength achieved through their thoughtful and specific placement. |
Beldner has deep ties to the San Francisco Bay Area. After maintaining a studio in Oakland for many years, she relocated to Woodland, CA in 2017 with her husband, Steve Briscoe, also an artist. Her sketchbooks/journals, from the past 36 years were acquired by the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America, Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University. The Archive of Recorded Sound, at Stanford University has acquired her collection of photographs and negatives. Through the years her art practice has expanded to cover many different mediums.
Beldner is the recipient of the James Phelan Award, Bemis Art Residency, Public Glass Residency, and Paulson Bott Residency. Her work is in the collection of Harvard, Crocker Art Museum, Oakland Museum, DeYoung Museum, Berkeley Art Museum, and the Oakland Museum of California, as well as many other private collections. |
We invite you to see Beldner's work in exhibition this February 17th – March 25th at Transmission Gallery San Francisco, concurrent with “The Object is The Subject: The Salesman’s Samples, 1988-1991,” an art exhibition of the Salesman’s Samples by Steve Briscoe.
