Beauty and Terror, Part 2
Picture
Robin L. Bernstein, The White Rose, string and wax on wood, 42" x 33"
September 22 - November 5
Thousands of cut pieces of string go into each intricate piece in Robin L. Bernstein's work now on view in Beauty and Terror, Part 2, at Transmission Gallery in Oakland. Comprised of eight recent pieces, Part 2 is a continuation of Bernstein's 2019 exhibition at Transmission Gallery Oakland, commemorating little known events of the Holocaust, along with stories of redemption and courage. Beauty and Terror, Part 1, is on view concurrently at Vargas Gallery at Mission College in Santa Clara through November 8th. Don't miss seeing the work in person if you can.

Consider for a moment, each piece in the series is researched to the smallest detail, the design carefully considered and then the shaped outline cut out of birch plywood with the design elements drawn onto it. Next comes a coating of wax mixed with a stabilizing substance and then, meticulously, reverently, piece by piece, Bernstein presses colored string into the rich and honeyed surface in a painstaking process that ultimately brings an incredible beauty and presence to the work, richly honoring the memory of those who suffered and died in atrocity in the Holocaust and reminding us to pay attention and stand up with courage against tyranny.

Regarding the exhibition, Bernstein says, "The good news is that political art and art around themes of social justice continue to find audiences, and the makers are not jailed, exiled, or dead!"

From Robin Bernstein, “The Arc of History,” the DeWitt Cheng review of Bernstein's Beauty and Terror Series for Democracy Chain:
The show is "a magnificent commemoration of the Holocaust, exhaustively researched, visually compelling and emotionally cathartic. The eighteen “string paintings” — eighteen will be the final number of pieces in the series, symbolizing ‘life’ in Jewish numerology — are affecting on several levels: as a pure aesthetic experience; as an intellectual and emotional catharsis; and as a demand that such horrors never recur. Bernstein’s deep dive into history informs her resplendent commemorative plaques, replete with putti, banner inscriptions, and simulated Baroque frames. They rescue history from oblivion.”

A Failure of Justice
At first glance, these artworks defy a clear medium and process. They appear to be embroidered or woven, made of mosaic, painted, or sewn. The colors are rich and the forms are attractive. They are “beautiful”. The viewer is inclined to step very close to examine the surface. The subject matter of Beauty and Terror, an 18 piece series, then becomes viscerally apparent. A paragraph of text accompanies each piece, retelling the horrific act of violence and terror that the artwork memorializes. Each is an example of how people will behave under set conditions. Many of these particular pieces refer to lesser-known Holocaust crimes as well as redemptive stories and heroic acts of resistance. Much of the string that is used is vintage and originated in Europe. Other work carries urgent contemporary content. Each piece is composed of thousands of tiny cut pieces of string that have been pressed into a bed of wax that has been brushed onto cut plywood. Each work takes between 4 and 6 months to create.

Biography

Robin L. Bernstein was born in St Louis, Missouri into a distinctly non-artistic family. Luckily, music was played and encouraged which lay the groundwork for creative, visual expression.

Bernstein studied Art in St Paul, MN, Champaign-Urbana, IL, and San Francisco, CA, before settling in Emeryville and Canyon, CA. She earned her MFA in Painting and Drawing but upon discovering wood construction began to combine woodcarvings with thinly cut sheet metal, hammered together with thousands of tiny escutcheon pins. Years later, and along a similarly obsessive vein, she began pressing colored string into wax after learning about the Huichol Indians and their spiritual practices in Central Mexico.

Robin’s current subject matter combined with her artistic technique is her way of shouting from the rooftops: those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Human behavior being highly predictable, after all. Robin and her husband have two children, now young adults.
