SACHIKO MIKI : THE VISITOR
August 4th - September 23rd, 2017
Quizzical and captivating, sculpture characters and objects by Japanese artist Sachiko Miki communicate worlds of information based on Miki’s keen observation of expression and stance. Their unabashed innocence, cautious inquisitiveness or exuberance inspire a connection to emotion, igniting a sense of compassion or recognition of what it's like to feel like a visitor while, on the other hand, eliciting the natural initial discomfort we might notice when encountering those strange or alien to our experience.
The pieces range in size from only a few inches tall, as in firebud and bean 5, to nearly 6 feet in height, as in the majestic and enigmatic piece, Sea. Miki works predominantly with fiberglass and resins, allowing her a certain freedom in scale and complexity. Richly nuanced colors imbue the work with a special glowing quality that's hard to resist. Also on hand are a series of watercolor and mixed media drawings that reveal the process of the artist as she goes about developing the sculptural work.
