At 9 ft. in height, Cole's large scale paintings invite us in to mysterious interior spaces, rooms or galleries poised between one world and another, as if in a trance, a reverie where things aren't quite what they seem.
Along with the large paintings, a collection of midsize works and an array of studies, present variations on the theme. Objects, doorways and windows occupy specific and clear positions, steadfastly maintaining a certain repose, while offering the possibility of an escape or conversely holding open a space for the outside world to enter in. The architectural frame work speaks to our endeavors to sustain, contain, protect and impose. Color is subdued, a pause from intensity and immediacy, evoking remembrance and longing.
Frank Cole is an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco. He creates narrative paintings and installations that reflect on architecture, collective memory, and human behavior. His recent body of work is based upon his family’s former home in southern Mississippi. Cole lives and works in Emeryville, CA.
