Karl X. Hauser
A Map of Our Catharsis

October 3 - November 16, 2024
_____________

Opening Reception
Saturday, October 5th from 1-4 pm

Artist's Talk
Saturday, November 9th, 2pm

Transmission is pleased to announce its 100th exhibition, A Map of Our Catharsis, featuring selections from Karl X. Hauser's recent explorations in 3-D printed sculpture.

Cathartic, indeed, Hauser’s figures grapple with the grittier emotions that emerge from both the personal and collective experiences of trauma and the anticipation of an unpleasant, unwelcome future looming on the horizon, if not already at our doorstep.  One might recognize grimaces, abject despondence, stark recognition and glee even, with a sense of vulnerability and even possibly hope underlying the ever so human stances of the personages assembled here.

Freed from the confines of traditional sculpture making, Hauser’s 3-D prints still resonate with his previous body of cast metal and resin work marked by surface textures such as Styrofoam and burlap. Now joined by pieces exuding a sense of inflated puffiness, past series, such as Balloon Man and personages, find new play in this show of Hauser’s new work.

Please join is for the Opening Reception and 100th Exhibition Party, Saturday, October 5th from 1-4 pm.

Biography:

Karl X Hauser was born in Michigan City, on a small farm in northwest Indiana. He played in the dirt under the family's trailer home, drew pictures, and learned to swim in Lake Michigan. His mother, a self taught artist who invented and painted "blue roses", encouraged him to draw as it didn't have the messy potential of paint.

Later, he worked for the railroad as a track laborer in order to save money for art school. He attended the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis where he studied sculpture and had his first introduction to video art. Soon after, he received his MFA in video and performance art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

While attending Herron he learned to make neon signs, which provided a livelihood as well as a medium for art. His early career was filled with experimentation - fronting a punk rock band, performance and video art, neon art, digital art, but throughout, drawing and the desire to make objects has been consistent.
